Superbike and Big Bike Towing — Getting It There Undamaged

A big bike is not a kapcai — it cannot be pushed any real distance, it cannot be dragged on a rope, and it cannot be strapped down however you feel like. This is how a superbike should be loaded, secured and delivered: wheel chock, soft straps, the correct tie-down points, and the parts that get wrecked most often when the job is done carelessly.

Big Bike Down Far From Home — When Motorcycle Towing Is the Only Option

Sunday morning ride. You are two hours out from home, deep into a stretch of road you picked because it is quiet, and the engine loses power. Or the chain snaps. Or the rear tyre goes flat somewhere between two R&R stops with no tyre shop in sight.

It reads like an ordinary breakdown until one thing sinks in: this bike is not something you can push home. A superbike or a big bike carries far more wet weight than the kapcai everybody learnt on — the moment it loses power it handles like a loaded trolley that refuses to go straight.

Three scenarios come through the chat more than any others.

  • Breakdown on a long-distance ride — a convoy heading up north or across to the east coast, one bike dead by the roadside while everyone else still has hours of riding left.
  • Breakdown at the track, or straight after a trackday — the bike is no longer road legal to ride home, or the engine gave up in the last session.
  • A newly bought bike or one that has been sitting — bought from another state, not road taxed yet, or laid up so long that riding it any distance is asking for trouble.

Why a Big Bike Cannot Be Pushed Far or Strapped Any Old Way Before the Tow Truck Arrives

Everybody’s first instinct is the same: push it somewhere shaded, then think. For ten metres to a safe shoulder, that is exactly right. Past that, you are trading a small problem for a bigger bill.

With a flat tyre, every metre you push grinds the sidewall between rim and tarmac. Alloy rims bend, and a chewed sidewall cannot be plugged — it gets replaced. A big bike is heavy, so that damage arrives far faster than it would on a small motorcycle.

If the engine has seized or the clutch is cooked, the rear wheel may not spin freely even with the box in neutral. Forcing it along in that state can take the chain, sprocket and bearings with it. At that point it is past what roadside assistance can do — nobody is reviving a seized engine on the shoulder.

And the worst one: dragging the bike on a rope behind a car or another bike. A motorcycle has no weight of its own holding it upright while being pulled, the front brake becomes half unusable, and the second the rope goes slack it can wrap into the front wheel. We have a separate note on why pulling it yourself ends up costing more than towing — read that before the rope comes out of the boot.

The rule is simple: a big bike gets carried, not dragged. Both wheels stay on the deck and the front wheel sits locked in a chock.

Wheel Chock, Soft Straps and Safe Tie-Down Points — Flatbed Towing Procedure for a Superbike

This is the part almost nobody watches closely, and it is exactly where damage either happens or does not. If you have ever seen a bike strapped down while still leaning on its side stand, you have seen the job done wrong.

A big bike gets loaded in this order:

  1. Let the exhaust cool. A pipe that has just been running will burn a hand and melt any synthetic strap that touches it. If there is no time to wait, the straps have to stay well clear of the header area.
  2. Push it up the ramp, do not ride it up. Two people — one on the handlebar, one steadying from behind. Nobody rides a bike onto a deck, in any situation.
  3. Roll the front wheel into the wheel chock until the rim sits hard against the stop. The chock is what holds the bike upright; the straps only stop it bouncing.
  4. Keep the steering straight and unlocked. A steering lock was never designed to hold strap tension for a whole journey.
  5. Strap the front with soft loops around the fork tubes below the triple clamp, or on the handlebar close to the clamp. Never wrap a strap directly onto brake lines, wiring, the master cylinder or the bar ends.
  6. Tighten the front straps in pairs until the forks compress about a third of the way, no further. Forks held fully compressed for a long run will damage the seals.
  7. Strap the rear to the subframe, the pillion footpeg bracket, or run a strap over the rear tyre. Never onto a moving swingarm, the wheel spokes, or the exhaust.
  8. Put it in first gear, switch off the ignition, and shake the bike before the truck moves. If it rocks, the straps are not done.

Fairing, Exhaust and Side Stand — What Gets Damaged Most in Big Bike Towing

The damage bill from moving a big bike rarely comes from the engine. It comes from three things people treat as minor.

Fairing. Superbike panels hang off thin tabs and grommets, not big bolts. Run a strap over the fairing or across the tank and the clamping pressure cracks those tabs from the inside — and the crack usually only shows up when the panel comes off at the workshop. A strap should not touch a panel at all; where it has to, the contact point gets padded. Mirrors fold in or come off first.

Exhaust. A titanium full system or a carbon slip-on is not structure — it was never built to carry weight or take a pull. It is not a tie-down point, not a lifting point, and not something to rest anything against. Strap marks on titanium never come off.

Side stand. This is the dangerous one. Some operators load a bike, leave it resting on the side stand, throw a strap over it and call the job done. The moment the truck brakes or takes a corner, the full weight of the bike swings one way onto one thin leg. What bends is not only the stand but its mounting on the frame — and if the bike goes over, the fairing, levers and tank all go with it.

A big bike travels upright, front wheel in the chock, side stand up. No exceptions.

If you are stuck by the road right now and want the correct unit sent the first time — WhatsApp Abang Tow with your live location, the bike model and what went wrong. We confirm the deck type and the price in the chat before anything moves.

One Bike or Several in One Trip — Motorcycle Towing for Convoys and Trackdays

Not every big bike job is one rider stranded alone. A good share of what comes in is group work.

A convoy with one or two bikes down mid-route — the group does not have to stop dead. The broken bikes get carried, the rest keep riding, and everybody meets again at the destination.

Trackdays and events — several bikes moved from the city out to the circuit beforehand, then collected after. Track bikes usually have no lights, plate or road tax left on them, so riding them on public roads is off the table entirely.

When more than one bike shares a deck, three things have to be right: every bike has its own tie-down points, no bike leans on the one beside it, and there is enough gap that handlebars and mirrors do not clash when the deck flexes.

For groups, send the whole list in one message — how many bikes, the model of each, and whether they all roll or some have locked wheels. A bike whose rear wheel will not turn needs different handling, and that decides the loading order.

Bike jobs are priced by distance the same way car towing is — from RM230 for a move under 50 km, from RM400 under 100 km, and from RM450 under 150 km. Those are starting prices; the full quote comes in the chat once we know the distance, the number of bikes and the destination.

Specialist Workshop, Home or Circuit — Choosing Your Superbike Towing Destination

Big bikes rarely go to the nearest workshop. They go to the right one — the place with the specific tools, the right diagnostics, and a mechanic who actually knows the model. That is why the destination is yours to set, not ours.

Three destinations come up most, and what to mention upfront for each.

  • Specialist workshop — give the name, the full address and the opening hours. If the workshop is already closed, we need to know whether the bike can be left outside or has to be held until they open.
  • Home — describe the access. A low porch roof, a narrow lane, a steep ramp into the garage or a back lane all decide where the truck can stop and how far the bike has to be pushed once it comes off the deck.
  • Circuit or event venue — name the paddock or pit, and say whether there is access control. Some venues only let transport vehicles in and out during set time windows.

Five Details That Speed Up Your Big Bike Towing Service

Big bikes break down far from home. That is the nature of riding — you do not break down outside your own gate, you break down halfway along a road you chose because it was quiet and good to ride.

Which is why one complete message beats ten back-and-forth replies. Put these five in at once so we do not have to ask them one by one:

  • Live location from WhatsApp — not just the name of the place. On the PLUS highway, add the KM marker and the direction you were heading.
  • Model and engine size, and whether it has full fairing or an aftermarket exhaust.
  • What went wrong — engine dead, flat tyre, snapped chain, or an accident.
  • Wheel condition — still rolling, or locked.
  • Full destination — workshop, home or circuit, and which state.

WhatsApp Abang Tow — 24 Hour Towing Service and Interstate Towing for Superbikes

We are on standby 24 hours across Peninsular Malaysia, and interstate towing is core work rather than an exception. Rode up north and left the bike there? The Penang tow truck coverage page lists the areas we cover there, and every other state has a page of its own. Bike work runs alongside our car towing and lorry towing, so the deck sent out is matched to what is being carried.

Not sure what the operator means by the terms they use? Our glossary of Malaysian towing terms explains wheel-lift, flatbed, winching and rigging in plain language — handy when you are trying to describe the state of your bike over chat.

Send Abang Tow one WhatsApp message — we match the deck and the tie-down kit to your bike, and the price is confirmed in writing before the unit moves. Standby 24 hours, whatever time your ride ended.

FAQ

Towing FAQ

My superbike has full fairing — is it safe on a flatbed?

It is safe, as long as it is strapped properly. The front wheel locks into a wheel chock so the bike stands upright without leaning on the side stand, and soft straps go around the fork tubes or the handlebar close to the triple clamp — never over the fairing or across the tank. Mention full fairing, an aftermarket exhaust or winglets upfront so the contact points can be padded before anything is tightened.

My bike’s rear wheel is locked — can it still be carried?

It can. A wheel that will not turn means the bike cannot be pushed up the ramp the normal way, so the job needs a winch or extra hands to get it onto the deck. Say so early in the WhatsApp message — that detail changes the equipment that goes on the truck, and it is far better known before the unit leaves than discovered when it arrives.

How much is big bike towing, and can you deliver to another state?

Price follows the distance from pickup to destination — from RM230 for a move under 50 km, from RM400 under 100 km, and from RM450 under 150 km. Those are starting prices. Interstate runs between Peninsular states are part of what we do; send the location and the full destination and the quote comes back in the chat before the unit moves.

Can you carry several bikes in one trip for a convoy or trackday?

Yes. Each bike needs its own tie-down points and enough clearance that handlebars do not clash when the deck flexes, so how many fit depends on the size of the bikes. Send the list of models in one message, along with whether they all roll freely — we work out the loading order from that and confirm one price for the whole trip.
